Know the RCM Process for Factory Machines

Created By: Hyprowira | Published Date: 23 July 2020 | Last Modified: 23 July 2020

RCM is a maintenance strategy undertaken to maintain the reliability of factory machinery. The RCM strategy is carried out on the engine to ensure all its components work perfectly so that the engine functions are maintained. Through the RCM maintenance strategy, the engine will avoid breakdowns, damage, and accidents. To better understand RCM along with the process, consider the following review.

RCM Process for Factory Machines

RCM stands for Reliability Centered Maintenance, machine maintenance that focuses on the reliability or function of a factory engine. The purpose of running the RCM process is to maintain the function of each machine component working properly. The RCM process includes damage prevention maintenance consisting of service activities, operational tests, and routine inspections. There is also maintenance repair if only found interference or damage to the system and engine components.

By early detection and engine maintenance from the start, you will benefit in many ways. The RCM method can increase the guarantee of safety and environmental safety of damaged machines, minimize operational costs and maintenance of engine damage, guarantee the reliability and availability of equipment, and increase engine life for longer.

Principle of Machine Maintenance with RCM

Because the main purpose of RCM is to maintain the functioning of the engine working system by identifying failures and planning corrective actions, the principle of implementing RCM upholds engine maintenance. There are at least seven RCM management principles as follows:

- Prioritize overall system functions over a single component. So, RCM will find out whether the machine can perform the main function if there is one component that fails.
- Maintaining the function of the system, not just maintaining one tool. So, what is maintained here is the whole machine working system, not just making the machine operate.
- Based on reliability, which is the ability of a system to continue to operate in accordance with the desired function.
- Maintain the reliability of engine functions.
- Defines failure as an unsatisfactory condition of the engine.
- Prioritizing safety over economic interests.
- Provide clear and tangible results.

Steps to Run RCM

RCM is an ongoing process carried out in several stages. The steps to run RCM like this:

1. System selection and information gathering. The system chosen is one that has a high corrective maintenance frequency, is expensive, and has a major effect on the smoothness of the process in the environment.

2. Definition of system boundaries to find out what is included and not in the observed system.

3. System description and Functional Diagram Block (FDB) with the aim of identifying and documenting important details of the system.

4. Determination of function and functional failure. The function in question is related to the speed, output, capacity, and quality of the product. While functional failure is the inability of the machine to fulfill its function.

5. Failure Mode and Effect Analysis to determine the impact of failure and decide what will be done to prevent, detect, and repair.

6. Logic Tree Analysis which is a qualitative measurement for classifying failure modes.

7. Task selection or maintenance policy selection to determine which maintenance actions are suitable to overcome the problem of failure on the machine.

RCM is the process of maintaining and maintaining factory machinery that is important for every industry. Not only to ensure that the machine continues to work optimally, but also to save the cost of expensive machine repairs if the damage is not detected early on.
