How Does a Vibration Meter Work?

Vibration meters are usually used to make reference measurements, where a newly purchased machine will have its vibration measured so that it can be used as a reference when making routine measurements.

If during the routine measurement it is found that the vibration is not in accordance with the reference from the reference measurement, it can be immediately investigated whether there is an estimated damage in the machine. Furthermore, the vibration meter is also useful in the measurement process before and after machine repair to determine whether the repair has been successful.

Last and most importantly, this vibration meter is used to measure the frequency and vibration power of a machine, whether it is safe or dangerous to the health of the workers who will use the machine.

How the vibration meter works

The way a vibration meter works is actually almost similar to a volt meter, the difference is only what is measured. The way it works is started by placing the sensor or magnetic base device on the object whose vibration will be measured. Then, quickly, the sensor will issue a voltage signal due to the vibration of the object which will be transmitted through the cable into the transmitter inside the vibration meter.

However, take it easy because the numbers displayed on the vibration meter are not in the form of voltage, but vibration values ??in the form of acceleration and velocity (speed per unit time). So, in the way this vibration meter works, two groups of vibration effects are found, namely hand arm vibration and whole body vibration.

Hand arm vibration is a vibration effect that is felt on the arm only. Usually this vibration effect occurs when using machines such as grinders, drills, electric saws, and compactors. Meanwhile, whole body vibration is a vibration effect that can be felt throughout the body. This effect is commonly felt when using heavy machinery such as contractor tools or factory machines where vibrations are felt to the floor.

How to use the vibration meter

After learning more about the function and how the vibration meter works, it's time for us to examine how to use the right vibration meter. Actually, the vibration meter device is divided into two, namely vibration meter with magnetic base and vibration meter with vibration sensor. Both have the same function and method of use.

First of all, let's turn on the vibration meter by pressing the on / off button of the device. You can set the unit of measurement to m / s or mm / s, depending on your needs. Then, simply attach the sensor and the base of the device to the surface of the object to be measured.

Hold for a few seconds until a number appears on the device screen, don't write down the numbers on the screen yet if it's still up and down. Furthermore, you can record numbers and calculate the vibration level, by looking at the mode, median, and mean of the vibration measurement sample. Finally, just remove and turn off the vibration meter device again.

How to calibrate the vibration meter

If the vibration meter you have is quite old, then you need to calibrate it periodically. Why is that? Vibration meters that have been used for a long time or are rarely calibrated may display inaccurate measurement results. Of course this can have a negative impact on the business or project you are currently working on or will receive.

For that, let's find out how to calibrate the vibration meter. You can do this in two radial ways, namely horizontal and vertical. To perform horizontal calibration, place the sensor in a horizontal position on the bearing cap. For vertical calibration, attach the device sensor vertically or proportional to the perpendicular to the bearing cap.
