Permanganometric titration is said to have an auto-indicator because the potassium permanganate used can change color depending on the type of reaction. This will make it easier for you later in the titration process. Just one drop of permanganate can make the solution being titrated change its color to a vivid bright pink color. When the solution turns pink, this means that an excessive amount of reagent has been used.

Properties of Potassium Permanganate

You need to know how the properties of potassium permanganate. This one reagent is a strong oxidizing agent. Especially in solutions that have these three properties, namely solutions that are weakly basic, neutral, and also weakly acidic. Conversely, in a solution that is strongly alkaline, the ions from the permanganate can be reduced.

Reduction of permanganate in a strong alkaline solution will be reduced to manganate ion (Mn2 +). When experiencing this reduction, as discussed earlier, the solution will change color. When it is reduced to manganate ion, the color that appears is green. For this titration method itself, it is highly recommended to use it when checking the concentration of a strong acidic solution. The reason is that there is no back and forth reaction but the desired reaction can occur immediately. This is because the electrode potential in the solution is greatly influenced by the pH of the solution itself.

In the process of doing this titration method, of course you will need several titration tools. Common tools you will need include a volume pipette, measuring flask, erlenmeyer tube, statif, burette, suction rubber, and so on. Some titration processes also include a catalyst to speed up the reaction, but of course it also depends on the needs.
