3 Ways to Make Simple Magnets

Magnets are not only available to buy from stores, you can also apply how to make your own magnets at home. This is not a figment! Magnets are basically metals that can attract iron, first discovered in a place called Magnesia.

Natural magnets are a type of magnet that is rarely found. The good news, however, is that if you need a magnet for your work project, there are simple ways you can create an artificial magnet. In fact, just by using a few simple materials you can already have an artificial magnet. Here are three ways to make simple magnets that you can try yourself.

Using the induction method

The first way to make a magnet is to apply the induction method. The induction method is a method that delivers attraction by utilizing the conducting elements. The method is quite easy, you just have to prepare a permanent magnet and other non-magnetic iron which will be converted into artificial magnets in this process.

Once these two ingredients are ready to use, place them in a parallel position, a short distance away but not sticking together. Also make sure there are no other metal objects around the area where these two materials are placed so as not to disturb the magnetic field and the induction process itself.

As long as it is in this position, the prepared non-magnetic iron will slowly pick up the attraction of the permanent magnet. If some items that are made of iron are held close to this non-magnetic iron, then it can attract the objects to stick. In fact, after a few hours, if the permanent magnet is separated from the non-magnetic iron, the iron will not lose its same magnetic capability any time soon.

Using electricity

The flow of electricity can also be used as a way to make magnets. That is why this method of making artificial magnets is known as the electromagnetic process. One thing that must be considered during the manufacturing process of this magnet is the power source itself. For safety purposes, you should not use a power source directly from the socket in your house.

Just use a regular battery and you can make your own magnets with this electromagnetic technique. The size of the battery that you want to use is free. Since this electromagnetic process requires direct current, it means you have to prepare two batteries. Also prepare the iron object that you want to turn into a magnet and iron wire.

The iron wire will be used to make a coil that will mediate the flow of electricity between the positive and negative poles of the battery stone. At the other end, connect the coil to the iron object that will be magnetized. Wait a minute, then the homemade magnets can be used and have an attraction to other iron objects.

Permanent magnet scrubbing

This last method is arguably the simplest way to make magnets. To apply this method, you need a permanent magnet as well as another non-magnetic ferrous object that you want to make an artificial magnet. Next, all you have to do is rub the permanent magnet on the non-magnetic iron surface.

To scrub this permanent magnet, it cannot be done carelessly. It won't work if you just rub it off. Make sure you rub the permanent magnet in only one direction on the non-magnetic metal surface. Do it in a consistent and regular manner. This consistency of direction and movement will transfer the permanent magnetic attraction to the non-magnetic iron.

Rub it many times for a long time, about 2-3 minutes. This also depends on the size of the object that you want to use as a magnet. The bigger and the cross-sectional area, the longer you need to scrub this permanent magnet. When finished, the non-magnetic iron object will become an artificial magnet, which is ready to use.

Although it looks simple, the principles of making magnets have also been widely adapted to make magnets on a larger scale. Such as magnets that have a greater function in various industrial fields, from magnets for medical equipment to lifting magnets commonly used in the construction industry. Everything is made from the principle of how to make a magnet similar to the one above.
